GROWING TULIPS
The tulip is the most popular of the spring bulbs. It also offers the greatest variety in shape, color and form of any perennial bulb. Although tulips are associated with Holland, they actually are not native there; tulips descend mostly from species originating in the Middle East. The Loves of Carmen dvd
Tulips typically bear cup-shaped flowers in almost every shade. They can be double or single, twisted or fringed, perfumed or non-scented. Tulips can range in size from rock garden miniatures to 2 1/2 feet or more in height. Most have broad leaves that quickly fade away in summer heat. Individual flowers last barely two weeks. However, since tulips offer various flowering seasons, you can have tulips in bloom from snow melt to the beginning of summer.

Tulips prefer a sunny location where they will be protected against strong winds. Partial or heavy shade isn’t very desirable as the stems have a tendency to bend toward the light and to become weak and floppy. Tulips will however do well where they receive shade for a few hours each day, and in some cases the colors seem to fade less and the flowers last longer when protected from full sun, particularly afternoon sun.
Soil: The ideal soil for tulips is a light, fertile and well-drained. Fresh manures should never be used in the preparation of tulip beds, however very well-rotted manure or compost may be used in fairly liberal quantities. Bone meal is one of the best fertilizers and may be applied to the tulip beds at the rate of 1/2 lb. per 25 sq. ft.
