Looking for information about a variety of plant life but aren’t sure where to find it or if it’s factual? Well the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has put together the database you’re looking for.
The Plants Database provides standardized information about plant life ranging from liverworts, vascular plants, mosses, hornworts, and lichens of the U.S. and its territories. It includes names, symbols, checklists, images, distributional data, characteristics, crop information, abstracts, automated tools, external web links, and every reference imaginable. The information contained in the database primarily promotes land conservation in the United States and its territories, but it also encourages academic and general day-to-day use. The database was initially created to reduce government spending by minimizing duplication and making the information exchange across various agencies and disciplines possible.

The Plants Database contains native and naturalized plants of the Plants Floristic Area (PFA), which consists of North America and all additional U.S. territories. Vascular plant distributions are mapped at the state level and by U.S. county. The checklists for the non-vascular mosses, liverworts, hornworts, and lichens cover all of North America north of Mexico.

Using the database is pretty simple. A user can utilize the Plants Database Name Search if you’re looking for single name plants or symbols and they even list symbols for unknown plants. These symbols and associated descriptive names are widely used by a number of federal agencies. However, if you’re looking for a list for an entire genus or family with synonyms, or a state, you can use the State Search for a larger list.

• Triumph Tulips – These tulips are the result of a cross between the Single Early Tulips and some of the later flowering varieties. Triumph Tulips are the largest and most important class of tulips. Tulips prefer a sunny location where they will be protected against strong winds. Partial or heavy shade isn’t very desirable as the stems have a tendency to bend toward the light and to become weak and floppy. Tulips will however do well where they receive shade for a few hours each day, and in some cases the colors seem to fade less and the flowers last longer when protected from full sun, particularly afternoon sun.

Soil: The ideal soil for tulips is a light, fertile and well-drained. Fresh manures should never be used in the preparation of tulip beds, however very well-rotted manure or compost may be used in fairly liberal quantities. Bone meal is one of the best fertilizers and may be applied to the tulip beds at the rate of 1/2 lb. per 25 sq. ft.
